NYOTA Project Conducts Nationwide Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Awareness and Screening Exercise
An opportunity for skilled youth to gain formal certification and unlock better economic opportunities
The National Youth Opportunity Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Project has successfully conducted a nationwide awareness and screening exercise for its Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) component, reaching youth in all 47 counties.
The exercise, held from 27th to 31stJanuary, 2026 targeted skilled young artisans, offering them an opportunity to have their existing competencies formally assessed and certified. Through the RPL component, the NYOTA Project aims to assess and certify 20,000 youth, enhancing their employability through nationally recognised certification and improved access to sustainable livelihoods.
Speaking during a press briefing, the Principal Secretary for Labour and Skills Development, Mr. Shadrack Mwadime, encouraged youth to take advantage of the RPL opportunity, noting its long-term value to their personal and professional growth.
“I am here to announce to the entire Republic that all young people who applied through *254# and selected the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) option are now ready to proceed through the full certification process until they receive their certificates. From 26th to 31st January 2026, screening and awareness activities are being conducted across all 47 counties,” said the PS.
Mr. Mwadime further noted that over 20,000 youth will be certified under the project’s RPL intervention, positioning them for expanded opportunities in both local and international labour markets.
His sentiments were echoed by H.E. Dr. William Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, who emphasized the importance of formal skills certification during the Business Start-Up Capital launch in Kisumu. The President highlighted that RPL certification enhances youth competitiveness in the international labour market, with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
About the RPL Awareness and Screening Exercise
The RPL awareness and screening exercise was spearheaded by officers from the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) in collaboration with the NYOTA Project Management Unit (PMU). The teams ensured a smooth, transparent, and inclusive process across all counties.
Youth from diverse regions turned up in large numbers, demonstrating enthusiasm and readiness to select their respective trades and begin the journey towards formal certification.
